Courses include You will study classical civilisation, covering the history, literature and culture of archaic Greece and republican Rome. You will read Homer alongside the histories of Herodotus and Sallust, the plays of Plautus, and the speeches of Cicero. You will study the literature, culture, history and politics of democratic Athens and of the Roman Empire at its height. You will read plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes; a dialogue by Plato; the histories of Thucydides and Tacitus; the Aeneid of Virgil; the satirical writings of Juvenal; and Petronius’ extraordinary novel. If you progress to Honours you will choose options from a wide range of courses: Interpreting Greek tragedy The Roman stage Greek/Roman art Gender and sexuality in ancient Rome Ancient medicine Homer and his readers Rhetoric at Rome Myths, fictions and histories of Alexander the Great Greek religion Cleopatra: life and legend The later Roman Empire.
